Okay, recently I was having bookish conversations with my fiancee and we had a fun discussion about books vs. movies (we are both in the books being better camp) which lead to the topic of:
reading a book before or after watching the movie
I am pro reading the book first, as I love to figure out the characters for myself so that I have no presumptions of what others think they look like. I love to imagine their settings and surroundings. I enjoy picturing the way they walk, talk and interact. It really gets your mind thinking and makes you see things from a unique perspective.
Greg believes in reading the book after seeing the movie. He thinks books are always better (as do I) and likes to enjoy the book completely so that it is the last thing in his mind and not the movie version. I think he is in this camp because the first book he read by Dean Koontz (his absolute favourite author) was Demon Seed and this was after having seen the movie. He went right out and bought the book after realizing the movie was based on the book and then decided books were always so much better.
The one book that is standing out to me is White Oleander by Janet Fitch - I loved the book so much and the movie was good (it made me cry just like the book did.)
Where do you stand on this debate? Read the book before or after watching the movie? Do you have any favourite movies you like that turned out better than the books? Any amazing books that were just as good in movie format?
