Recommended Reads: HARRY POTTER

Recommended Reads is a where I will write up a post about a book recommended to me and whether I liked it or not. I have a few ideas kicking around for posts and thought I'd begin with a series that was recommended to me by my Mom. She was adamant that I give this series a try when I was in college and I am so thankful that I did. You might just find that my Mom has been a great influence on some of the books that helped me get back to reading.

HARRY POTTER - My Mom started reading this one summer after her best friends grandson told her all about the story he was reading. It was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (aka Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone). She thought it sounded interesting and fun, so she borrowed his book and decided it was a series she would need to read all the way through.

So after my sister and I read the first book, we were hooked just like Mom. We would chat about the books and were eager for the next ones to release. We watched the movies together and at one point Mom even gave me her copies of some of the books for the collection I had growing. My copies are the most worn of everyone's as we each took turns reading them, until my sister bought her own copies. I like the looks of the worn spines now... it reminds me just how much fun we had reading the series and discussing the books.

I just might need to reread the series soon. I loved being pulled into the wizarding world and following Harry, Ron and Hermione on their adventures. It was a joy to watch them grow up and learn about themselves. It was also a wonderful memory of something that my sister, my mother and I shared.

It was also one of the first series to get me back into reading again - college was tough so I didn't read much for pleasure, but this series helped me get back to my love of reading and kick started my need to have shelves filled with books.

Have you read the Harry Potter series? How did you get into the books? Who did you share them with?

  1. Reread them with the rest of us bloggers! It's been fun. I haven't read Chamber of Secrets yet this month even though I was so anxious to get to it! I can already say it's been amazing to get back into the series as I haven't reread it in years. I always say they're amazing but rereading them reminds me exactly how wonderful they are. I started reading them when I was about 13 and my sister was 10, I think, as a friend of the family told us about them. We were hooked! My sister did a few midnight releases and we always read her copies (my stepdad included!) and then I bought my own set four years ago (now I'm wishing I had the new covers...so pretty). Sigh. I just love this series. :)

    1. I think this summer I might reread the series when I am on vacation. That is when I will have the most time to dedicate to it. And thanks for sharing your Harry Potter beginnings too.

  2. Oh yes. I`ve read the books, watched the movies and was sorry to finish the series.

My son used to come home with an order form once a month. It would list books that were available for young readers. I came across Harry Potter blurb and knew this book was for me. I bought the three pack for Bossman as a Xmas gift. The weird part was he didn`t find them all that exciting. I finally hooked him, when Harry was told he was a wizard. After that it was bedtime reading.

    1. Aww that's an awesome Harry Potter story. :) And I was sad to see them end as well.

I read every comment and try to reply to them all. Thanks for visiting my little piece of the blogosphere.
